The standard

The construction industry needs good-quality BIM objects. Manufacturers or designers creating their own objects for practice and project-specific purposes can do so to this common standard, enabling greater collaboration, efficiency and more meaningful information exchange.

Client groups, as well as project managers, will feel the benefit, as they can be confident in the quality of the BIM objects used within their project models.

BIM objects that meet the requirements of the NBS BIM Object Standard will help to realize the true benefits of digital construction – resulting in better value across the whole life of the built asset.

Shared parameters

The NBS BIM Object Standard defines the information requirements for BIM objects.

The shared parameter file includes the properties used by the NBS BIM authoring teams that build objects. The scope of this file includes parameters used to aid interoperability in general, COBie, IFC property sets and object categorization properties.

The naming used in this file can be used in any BIM authoring environment for consistency. It is provided in Autodesk® Revit® TXT format, which is a tab-separated format that can be reviewed easily in tools such as Microsoft Excel.

Templates

The NBS BIM authoring team has a number of Revit® templates that allow objects which follow the NBS BIM Object Standard to be authored more easily.

Using these templates as a starting point eliminates the need to load each shared parameter individually and the need to manually sort them into the correct group.

Family templates are provided for generic, face-based, floor-based, line-based, wall-based, ceiling-based and roof-based objects. A project template is also provided with preloaded IFC Psets.
